PERSONALITY

πŸ”ͺ traumatised - Mount Massive has done its number on Miles. Being attacked, seeing cannibalism/gore/horrors, experiencing the Walrider, losing his fingers - it's not something he will walk away from without some kind of mental injury. And physical ones.
πŸ”ͺ angry - His time there has changed him into someone with a shorter fuse. The worst of humanity has been presented in front of him, and it's made him bitter, quick to lash out at others.
πŸ”ͺ curious - It's what made him go to MM after receiving an anonymous tip in the first place, what made him become an investigative journalist. Although he quickly regretted his decision and tried to leave, Miles still continued to collect evidence and information - curiosity, and a desire to bring Murkoff down.
πŸ”ͺ reckless - Walking into dangers unknown? Without a thought of his own safety?
πŸ”ͺ cynical - Having seen the worst parts of the world, it's made him take a harsher stance on things.
πŸ”ͺ rough - He likes to swear, he doesn't care who's around to hear it, and physically? He's a bit banged up.
πŸ”ͺ ambitious - A new story and being the one to expose it is too much for Miles to bear. He can't pass up the opportunity to further his career, to find out the next big thing, to see where things can take him.
πŸ”ͺ dark humour - Making fun of his attackers was one of the only ways he came out with a bit of sanity left in him.
πŸ”ͺ selfless ethics - Even after being attacked, hurt, constantly escaping murder, and knowing the types of people trapped at the Asylum, Miles still has sympathy for them, still believes that what happened to them was wrong.
πŸ”ͺ determined - Despite everything, Miles never gave up on his end goal and was driven to see things to the end - even if he didn't quite have a choice after being trapped by Father Martin.
πŸ”ͺ willful
πŸ”ͺ sympathetic - Even Chris Walker, his main antagonist, received his sympathy in the end.
πŸ”ͺ possibly a bit insane

ABILITIES

- Surprising athletic feats (climbing/leaping ledges, agility)
- Physically strong
- With the Walrider: a host of nanites is "fused" with him as its host. The Walrider is capable of immense physical strength and other unknown things.

WALRIDER

As it is composed of nanites, it is nearly invisible to human eyes, only showing a faint black aura unless it comes into very close proximity to the player. Miles can only see it clearly through the night vision mode on his camcorder. Despite having no actual bones, muscles or internal support structure to speak of, the Walrider's nanites are capable of immense physical strength, and it is the most physically powerful entity in the game.

ABOUT

You are Miles Upshur, an investigative reporter whose ambition is about to earn him an intimate tour of hell on earth. Always willing to risk digging into the stories no other journalist would dare investigate, you will seek out the dark secret at the heart of Mount Massive Asylum. Stay alive as long as you can. Record everything. You are not a fighter; to navigate the horrors of Mount Massive and expose the truth, your only choices are to run, hide, or die.

Miles heads out to Mount Massive Asylum after receiving an email from an anonymous source about the suspicious activity that is going on at the asylum. After finding a way in, he is greeted with a grim discovery: the dead bodies of staff, security guards and tactical operators—one of who warns him about the imminent dangers that lurk in the asylum before dying. One of those dangers is Chris Walker, a former murderer turned into inhuman beast, constantly hunting Miles down in an attempt to kill him.

To escape, after Miles restarts the generator in the basement of the Administration Block and returns to the Security Control room to open the main doors, Father Martin overwhelms him and injects him with a sedative. He says that he cannot allow Miles to leave just yet. He shows Miles security footage of soldiers being slaughtered by an entity called The Walrider (a man-made swarm of nanites; small, nanoscopic machines which collectively possess great strength and power, and the source of insanity in the Asylum), and that he has to accept the gospel so all doors before him will open. Miles then blacks out and is transported by Father Martin to the holding cells in the Prison Block.

After going through the Sewer to reach the Male Ward, Miles is chased by a few patients. During the chase, Miles escapes in a dumbwaiter and meets Doctor Trager, who ambushes him and takes him captive. Trager then tortures him by cutting off two of his fingers with a pair of large bone scissors, but Miles manages to escape when Trager leaves the room. Miles eventually finds the key to the elevator. Trager opens the gate when the elevator passes him, but Miles is able to hold him back. Trager is crushed by the elevator, killing him.

Miles then meets up with Father Martin, who tells him to meet him outside. Miles encounters The Walrider from here onward as he progresses through the Courtyard. Father Martin is next seen inside the Female Ward, where he shouts down at Miles from the upper floors, telling him how to reach him. During a jump, Miles loses his camcorder as it falls down through a gap, and he is forced to descend into the darkness without his night vision to get it back.

Miles then returns to the Administration Block, where he gains access to the Chapel by getting the key from the Theater to unlock the stairwell. There he witnesses the crucifixion of Father Martin, who asks him to record his death. Afterwards, Miles enters the Underground Lab using the elevator; however, he is chased by The Walrider through a long corridor and gets ambushed by Chris Walker. The Walrider, in turn, ambushes Walker and brutally murders him. Miles continues ahead and meets Dr. Wernicke, who explains how the entire event started in the first place, including what they intended to do with the patients (hypnotise and traumatise them to encourage human cells to create nanintes). Wernicke instructs Miles on how to stop The Walrider: by killing its host, William "Billy" Hope, by disabling his life support system.

After Miles terminates Billy's life support and seemingly kills him, The Walrider, now without a host, attacks Miles and fuses itself into his body. Severely wounded, Miles limps towards the exit, only to find Dr. Wernicke and several soldiers waiting for him. The soldiers shoot him, but as he falls to the ground, Wernicke realizes Miles has become The Walrider's new host. As the screen fades to black, The Walrider can be heard killing the soldiers as they scream in agony.

At the end of the DLC Whistleblower, as Waylon Park is about to leave Mount Massive and is attacked by an employee (Jeremy Blair), the Walrider grabs Blair and kills him - but doesn't attack Waylon. As Waylon gets into Miles's jeep and prepares to drive away, Miles can be seen walking towards the car with the nanoswarm Walrider covering him in a dark mist.

APPEARANCE

A well-built adult man with fair skin. His face is never seen in-game, but his shadow reveals he has short hair. His attire includes a brown work jacket unzipped to reveal a white dress shirt tucked into his blue jeans and a black belt. He also wears brown work boots. His left ring finger and right index finger are cut off after his run-in with Trager. After fusing with The Walrider and becoming its new host, his entire body has been submerged within an aura of darkness.
